The square derives its name from Mananchira, a man-made freshwater pond built in the 14th century by Zamorin Mana Vikrama, the then-ruler of Kozhikode. Originally the primary water source for the Zamorin’s palace, the pond was at the heart of the royal administrative complex. The area around Mananchira once housed several important structures of the Zamorin era, and even today, it echoes the historical and political importance of Kozhikode during that time.
